I was recently asked a question by a fellow Direct Sales consultant and I thought her question and my answer would make for a good blog post. Here was her question.

“After 4 years in Direct Sales, I am ready to step out. I am not sure if I am going to take a long break or completely stay out of Direct Sales. Shelly, how do I resign from my Direct Sales Company?”

As a long time Direct Sales Team Leader…I can tell you that there is a right and a wrong way of doing it.

First of all, just don’t ignore emails/phone calls from your upline or company. They are not mind readers and have no idea you don’t want to continue. It is your job to contact your recruiter, your upline and your company to let them know you will no longer be continuing. You can do this via phone calls, emails or handwritten letters. As soon as you have made your decision, I recommend you notify them all within a few days.

Second of all..If you are resigning on bad terms with your upline or company, You should never run around and bad mouth them to others. Just because the company might not of been a good fit for you, doesn’t mean its not a good fit for someone else.

I can’t speak for every team leader in Direct Sales, but I can speak on how I have managed my own team. I have never been angry or resentful if a consultant decides to leave. Circumstances change, life changes and so forth and I always keep that in mind. I never harrass them to stay and give it another try. I think most team leaders know that consultants come and go all of the time and the majority of team leaders have no problem with respecting your decision.
