Plagiarizers – Ignorance Is Not Bliss

One of the disadvantages about working online is having to deal with content stealers or plagiarizers. It’s inevitable. If you haven’t been bitten, consider yourself lucky.

On the other hand, are you the plagiarizer? Plagiarizing comes in different forms. Typing up a recipe and reprinting it somewhere online – website, forum, ebook etc. from your Grandma’s recipe book she bought back in the 40’s is still consider plagiarism. Who’s the author of that recipe book?

Next time you want to reprint something online, stop and really think where you’re pulling that source from and give credit where credit is due.

As you know, I have been a victim of folks stealing my article content and respinning it for their own needs. I have had my forum board posts and business tips that I post stolen from me and reposted elsewhere…I have had my business ad content…stolen from me by my competitors.

This type of behavior is just unprofessional and usually done by lazy and uncreative people. It is wrong. They might get away with it for a little while but eventually they are always found out and exposed.

People need to realize that there are indeed laws to protect yourself from content stealers and article spinners. (oh, lets not forget those who steal recipes too!)

It appears to me (and has happened to me) that most people are not lazy, but simply not informed on plagerism and/or not creative enough to come up with their own ideas, so ‘borrow’ them as this is fairly constant in our profession. How many times do we as leaders tell our new people, “Do not re-invent the wheel. Use what is already out there”. We need to be responsible enough to explain what is acceptable and what is not as far as ‘borrowing’ other people’s work.
